Having heartburn during pregnancy is very common, especially later in pregnancy when the baby takes up more space. This burning sensation is called gastric reflux (or acid reflux). It happens when the contents of the stomach move back up toward the throat.

Fortunately, there are simple ways to relieve these symptoms. This infographic explains why reflux is more common during pregnancy and offers tips to help you manage it, with or without medication.

If your symptoms are frequent and very intense, it may be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a more severe form of gastric reflux. In this case, medications such as esomeprazole are often needed to help manage the symptoms.

As with any medication, it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider before making any changes to ensure the treatment is right for you. Your doctor, midwife, or pharmacist can guide you toward the option that best fits your situation.
